This event is part of the Harvard Business School Association of Southern CA / Business of Tech Series.
Over the past ten years since the inception of bitcoin, a new class of digital assets has captured the imagination and interest of investors large and small, seasoned and novice. In this second event in our HBSASC Business of Tech Series, we will explore and discuss the investment landscape of cryptocurrencies, coins, and tokens with a diverse panel of experts on various aspects of this space. Come learn about the regulatory environment surrounding crypto assets, investment options for accredited and unaccredited investors, small and large, US vs. internationally-based investments, security vs. utility tokens, and who to turn to for information and advice.
Key questions to be addressed include:
- What is the current state of crypto regulations in the US and internationally that is shaping and defining the crypto investment landscape?
- What are the different investment avenues available to crypto investors? Exchanges, venture funds, hedge funds, ICOs, funding portals, etc.
- What are different bases on which to classify or categorize crypto assets? Currency Tokens, Privacy Tokens, Platform Tokens, Utility Tokens, Exchange Tokens, etc, …
- What crypto investment vehicles are available to US investors right now? Futures, Options, etc.
- What key resources are available to investors considering investing in crypto digital assets?
- What does the future hold for the crypto investment space? Regulations, risks, returns…

Howard Marks – Cofounder & CEO, StartEngine
Howard Marks is the co-founder and CEO at StartEngine, a leader in equity crowdfunding and security token offerings. Marks founded StartEngine with the mission to help entrepreneurs achieve their dreams. Marks was the founder and CEO of Acclaim Games, a publisher of online games now part of The Walt Disney Company. Before Acclaim, Marks was the co-founder of Activision Blizzard and Chairman of Activision Studios from 1991 until 1997. As co-founder, former Board Member, and Executive Vice-President of video game giant Activision, he and a partner took control in 1991 and turned the ailing company into the $50B market cap video game industry leader. As a games industry expert, Marks built one of the largest and most successful games studios in the industry selling millions of games. Marks is the 2015 “Treasure of Los Angeles” recipient awarded for his work to transform Los Angeles into a leading technology city. Marks is also named one of the 500 most influential people in Los Angeles by the Los Angeles Business Journal. Marks is a member of Mayor Eric Garcetti’s technology council. Marks has a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from the University of Michigan. He is bilingual and is a triple national of the U.S., United Kingdom, and France.
Amy Wan – Cofounder & CEO, Sagewise
Amy Wan is Founder & CEO of Sagewise, a safety net for smart contracts. She has authored the Bloomberg Law practice guide to ICOs and Lexis Nexus’ Private Equity practice guide. Previously, she was a Partner at a boutique securities law firm and General Counsel at a real estate crowdfunding platform. Amy is also the founder and co-organizer of Legal Hackers LA, which programs around the intersection of law and technology; was named one of ten women to watch in legal technology by the American Bar Association Journal in 2014 and one of 18 millennials changing legaltech by law.com in 2018; and was nominated as a Finalist for the Corporate Counsel of the Year Award 2015 by LA Business Journal. Amy has also worked in international regulatory and trade policy at the U.S. Department of Commerce, and was a Presidential Management Fellow at the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Transportation. She holds an LL.M. in Public International Law from the London School of Economics and Political Science, a JD from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law, and a BA in Biological Sciences from the University of Southern California.
Cory Klippsten – Chief Investment Officer, DNA.Fund
Cory Klippsten is President and Chief Investment Officer of DNA, which provides funding, strategy and consulting for the world’s highest potential decentralized networks. Before jumping down the crypto rabbit hole, he operated as a startup advisor and founder, worked for Google, McKinsey, Microsoft and Morgan Stanley, and earned an MBA in Finance and Entrepreneurship from the University of Chicago. He grew up in San Francisco and Seattle, split 15 years between New York and Chicago, and now lives in Santa Monica with his wife and two young daughters. His hobbies include basketball, history and travel (Istanbul and Barcelona are favorites).
Pamela Day – Founder & CEO, Paladin Trust
Pamela Day is the founder and CEO of Paladin Trust, a cryptocurrency custodian company that manages digital assets. She built a trading desk at Paladin, and she has an extensive background in the securities industry, public and private capital raises, and building successful entrepreneurial ventures. Famous for: her appearance on The Apprentice and Trailblazer Award by the Forum for Women Entrepreneurs.
Jake Ryan – General Manager of Tradecraft Capital
Jake Ryan is the founder and portfolio manager of Tradecraft Capital, which was formed in January 2018. Prior to the formation of Tradecraft, Mr. Ryan had 20 years of professional experience in developing software technology, as well as personal investing experience including trading and investing in stocks, bonds, real estate, and options, and, more recently, crypto assets. Mr. Ryan has been the founder and CEO of Venice Consulting Group (VCG), an application development company as well as a startup advisor, angel investor and advisor to Mucker Capital. Mr. Ryan also writes a blog on Medium.com and is a top writer on investing and bitcoin. Jake Ryan earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from The University of Texas at Austin. He is also an author of research work in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), security and privacy. Mr. Ryan has been the keynote speaker at AI conferences and has published his work, “Intrusion Detection with Neural Networks”, which has over 600 Google Scholar Citations.
Eman Safadi – COO, LA Blockchain Lab & Principal, EHS Consulting
Eman is a strategy consultant and general manager who helps organizations identify and implement key technologies that can fundamentally change their business, most recently focusing on blockchain, tokenomics, and use cases across the healthcare vertical. She is also the COO of the LA Blockchain Lab, a collaboration of UCLA, USC, the City of LA, enterprises, startups, and nonprofits working to build the blockchain ecosystem in Southern CA. Prior to moving to LA, she led key technology initiatives for the Dept of Education to overhaul and modernize the FAFSA process and its underlying solutions and technologies. She spent a year in Jordan as Chief of Staff for HM Queen Rania where she strategically reorganized and oversaw all local and international operations. Previously, Eman cofounded Xypnos, a developer of embedded software for IoT devices and Ultiverse, a cross-platform messaging venture. She spun off and ran WorldCare Technologies, which operates the largest telemedicine network internationally and spent time at the World Bank, McKinsey, and Verizon Broadband Services. She holds an MS in computer science from MIT and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
