Music fans aren't incentivized to listen to up-and-coming artists which leads to low engagement for non-mainstream artists. Streaming is supposed to democratize music and provide an even playing field for everybody but this is not always the case. In 2017, 99% of all streams (377 billion) accounted for only the top 10% of tracks. 1% of streams accounted for all other tracks. Which means that streaming platforms are pushing the most popular artists into fans faces, leaving the aspiring artists very little in terms of exposure.
